If you do not love yourself, I say you are not ready to love another. This is because we need to love ourselves, flaws and all, to be the best versions of ourselves. We all have a critical voice in our head telling us we are “not enough”. We’re either too fat, too skinny, too clumsy, a physical feature is not quite how you want it to be, or that there is an aspect of our personality that you don’t like.

What is Self-Worth and How to Build Self-Worth

I really believe that self-worth is a vital attribute of a healthy mindset. If you believe you are worthy of life, worthy of speaking up, worthy of existing, it can make a huge difference to your perspective.

Every human has the right to feel self-worthy. They must feel this way to feel happy and healthy. When there is a decrease in self-worth, then this is when a person feels down, depressed or unhappy. Sometimes self-worth is caused from a younger age, and often by the way we are treated by our parents, then by extended family and friends and the society.

So how do we build self-worth?

The first stage in building self-worth is to stop comparing yourself to others and assessing your every move; basically, you need to challenge your critical inner voice.

The critical dialogue of thoughts that run through our minds undermines our sense of self-worth and even leads to self-destructive behaviours, which make us feel even worse about ourselves. For example, because we feel so rubbish, we decide we cannot be bothered to get out of bed in the morning and stay there past mid-day. Now, you when you finally get up, you feel worse and the critical voice in your head kicks in stronger and louder. This is why we need to really change the negativity to positive vibes and speak to ourselves as if we are a dear friend looking for comfort and empathy.

Here are some tried and tested method in building your self-worth. These don’t happen over-night, and there will be times when you might feel down, but trying to better your self-worth is the first step to feeling better:


  • Add meaning to your life, by creating meaningful relationships with friends, peers and partners – You should socialise with people who make you laugh, inspire you and with those whose company you enjoy.
  • Participate in activities that you are interested in to build your self-worth. This can offer a huge boost to your confidence too. Sign up with a personal trainer to get your fitness in check, or maybe you want to join that book club you’ve seen advertised, or you would quite like to try a new alternative therapy. Whatever tickles your fancy, try it out and enjoy it!
  • Volunteer or help others – it’s proven to make you feel great and build your self-worth. Helping others, especially those who are in worst situations than you help to build perspective and clears your mind. Contributing to a humanitarian cause or trying, in some way, to improve the lot of future generations, helps build self-esteem.

How to Strive for Goals in 2019

This years, to feel your best, and to help build your self-worth, I would recommend creating a plan of action for yourself. Go and buy a diary and write down what you will achieve each month. Just 12 things for each month to begin with.

So, your diary might look like this:

  • January – Join the Gym and get a Personal Trainer 2 x a month
  • February – Ring the Animal Rescue Shelter to see if they need any Volunteers
  • March – Get a new hairdo and look, invest in my image so I feel great
  • April – Go to a Reiki Session as a form of alternative therapy and self-discovery
  • May – Visit a different country with a friend for a weekend
  • June – Have a clear-out of my wardrobe and give anything I don’t need to charity
  • July – Practice Meditation once a week using YouTube Videos and Tutorials

And so on….

These will become your goals and each time you do one, you will feel great sense of accomplishment and once you complete the goal, you will also feel like you have achieved something for yourself, which will increase your self-worth.
